Easy Lifestyle Changes to Increase Your Energy & Improve Your Mood and Skin

Many chronic diseases are caused by lifestyle. People tend not to exercise as much as they should; they allow themselves to become overweight, by indulging in unhealthy foods and habits that may lead to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and strokes. The problem with unhealthy and bad eating habits is that they are difficult to turn around. Many people try to change their lifestyle all at once, which is extremely difficult to accomplish. As a result, they often give up all of their healthy habits and resort to the usual negative health habits that they had before they attempted a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes it just takes a few days or a few weeks of trying to live healthy before the individual becomes overwhelmed and gives up. They stop exercising and go back to eating processed foods and junk foods. This is why it is better to change your health habits one habit at a time so that you don’t become overwhelmed and stop trying to be healthy altogether.

Most weight loss programs work if they are done carefully and don’t deprive the individual too much. The same is true of exercise programs. If you choose an exercise that you really enjoy or increase your physical activity gradually, it will be a lot easier to stick to the program so that you don’t become discouraged and quit exercising altogether.

The trick to healthy living is to begin gradually. Don’t try any trendy diet or fitness fad. If you try a fad with gusto, you are likely to respond negatively and you won’t stick with the programs. There are a few simple things you can do to live a happier and healthier life. Start with just these 5 changes in health habits:

  • Try eating one healthy meal a day. Even if you eat processed foods most of the time, by eating just one healthy meal each day, you will feed your body with good nutrition and healthy proteins. Healthy meals consist of mainly fruits and vegetables, supplemented with whole grain products, and lean meats.
  • Drink a glass of water before each meal. Water is perhaps the best liquid you can drink.  By drinking a glass of water before meals (an 8-ounce glass is enough,) you will feel fuller before eating, and you won’t eat as much.
  • Be active during lunch.  Try eating your meals and then take some time to exercise. You don’t have to work out excessively but you should be able to take a brisk walk. Not only will this energize you but also it will help burn off the calories and aid in the digestive process. It really doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do as long as you choose something reasonable that will help you feel better after eating your lunch. Exercising also helps decrease stress.
  •  Try a Meal Replacement Bar. This involves eating a healthy protein bar as a snack instead of junk foods. Most meal replacement bars contain a lot of good nutrition and fiber. They are also not as calorie-rich as you would think. They help stave off hunger pangs that are typical by mid-afternoon time. Keep a stash of these protein bars in your desk at work or in your purse or briefcase so you can grab one whenever you feel hungry. It will keep you from going to the vending machines and making poor food choices. Try eating a meal replacement bar that is high in fiber and that has at least 10 to 15 grams of protein per bar.
  • Exercise regularly. If you have a gym membership, try working out at least 3-4 times per week. Choose an activity you enjoy and make the most of it for at least a half hour per session. This will help energize you, may build muscle mass, and will help you lose weight by burning off excess calories.

Are you dreaming about warm, sunny days of summer?  We are, too. But did you know that  December through April is the BEST time for skin rejuvenation and laser treatments?
So what are the best spa treatments to have in the winter. Here are some of the Top winter spa treatments offered at MaxAesthetics Skin care spa in Philadelphia.

During the winter, the days are shorter and the sun is less bright overhead. Everyone is already bundled up and covering their skin from the sun's harmful UV rays, and spending more time indoors. This makes winter perfect for lasers and skin rejuvenating treatments!

  • Lasers and light based treatments put A LOT of heat and energy into your skin, leaving it especially sensitive and more vulnerable to UV damage. Excess sun exposure after a laser treatment will intensify your skin's sensitivity, and may interfere with the results of your treatment!
  • Lasers typically work best on skin that hasn't had recent sun exposure, and can't be used on sun burnt skin.  In the winter, most of us  are at our palest and have had enough time for our skin to recover from summer sun exposure.
  • Rejuvenating treatments like chemical peels, slough off dead skin to reveal new, fresher skin. This new skin is ultra photo-sensitive, so precautions need to be taken to avoid UV exposure in order to prevent hyperpigmentation or other issues.  Remember, sun damage is the biggest offender in causing the visible signs of aging!
Winter is the ideal time of year for the following spa treatments that may be affected by excess heat and sun exposure:
Laser Rejuvenation  such as laser Genesis will aid in tightening the skin and shrinking large pores for a softer smoother skin.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser Vein Removal
Skin Resurfacing
Skin Lightening  : Winter may be the best time for skin lightening since the treatments required may be affected by sun exposure
Microneedling  : Microneedling offers a wide range of healthy skin benefits from scar repair to collagen boost.
I PL Photo Facials : Gets rid of Dark spots , freckles and sun damage.

Acne Prone Skin requires a balance of detoxification to reduce or kill the P acne bacteria, exfoliation to break down and remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, and calming ingredients to reduce inflammation , redness and the prevention of possible blemishes and even scars.

When you suffer with acne prone skin, choosing the right cleanser and other skin specific products can aid the process of ridding your skin of the bacteria that make their way into pores and lead to inflammatory breakouts and even infection. A thorough cleansing with the proper exfoliation also removes dead cells on the surface of your skin, which makes for better absorption of the acne product that follows cleansing.

The Top 5 Ingredients to look for in your acne cleanser and other acne products either for your face or your body are as follows:

1. Benzoyl Peroxide: is a topical antibiotic that kills Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes, the bacteria that causes acne inflammation.  Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial agent due to its oxygenating property which moves oxygen into clogged pores thereby killing the P acne bacteria which cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment.

Benzoyl Peroxide products come in varying strengths ranging from 2.5% to 10 %. The percentage you will need may depend on the severity of your acne and the amount of bacteria in the skin.

2. Glycolic Acid: a form of alpha-hydroxy acid generally derived from sugar cane works to gently exfoliate dull skin cells, unclogging pores and aids in the regulation of sebum.

3. Salicylic Acid: is a keratolytic agent or exfoliant. It belongs to the same class of drugs as aspirin ( salicylates ). It works by increasing the amount of moisture in the skin and dissolving the substance that causes the skin cells to stick together and is an anti-inflammatory.

4. Echinacea Purpurea Extract : Herbal extract derived from the leaf; detoxifying, healing and is used as immune stimulant when taken internally.

5.Chamomile:  promotes healthy skin by relieving irritations thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Chamomile’s flavonoids and essential oils penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper layers . As a traditional medicine, it’s been used for centuries to treat wounds, skin irritations, eczema, gout etc.

At MaxAesthetics Skin Care spa we utilize customized skin care products for acne that incorporate all of the above ingredients.

The Acne clear Cleanser incorporates a 5% Benzoyl Peroxide to kill acne bacteria fast resulting in detoxification.

The Acne Clear Convenient Acne Pads used to reduce oiliness incorporates both Glycolic and Salicylic acid to produce a mild  exfoliation that will balance oil production and reduce inflammation.

The Acne Clear Serum incorporates All elements of a great acne product. It kills bacteria, exfoliates and unclogs pores, it reduces inflammation and heals the skin thus reducing the chance for acne blemishes and scars to develop.

Tomatoes get their skin boosting qualities from the antioxidant Lycopene. The lycopene in tomatoes is excellent at preventing UV damage to skin cells and their high vitamin A content supports healthy skin cell production to keep skin firm. Tomatoes are also very hydrating thanks to high water content.

Benefits of Lycopene:

  • Overall Skin Health
  • Skin Hydration
  • Boosts Protection from UV Damage
  • Heart Health
  • Bone Health
  • Stroke Prevention
  • Cancer Prevention
  • Anti-Aging

The nutrients found in tomatoes are linked to prevention of the sticking together of blood platelets in the arteries, which helps reduce risks for stroke and heart attack. While lycopene is present in raw tomatoes, even more lycopene is liberated when tomatoes are subjected to mild heat. Cooking tomatoes doubles their lycopene power and maximizes their anti-aging effects

Best known for containing lycopene, which helps wipe out the harmful effects of UV rays, tomatoes are a great addition to your diet. Found also in watermelon, pink grapefruit, carrots, guava and red pepper, lycopene also boosts the vascular system, giving your cheeks a nice rosy color.
Lycopene is better absorbed by the body when it’s in the form of processed tomato products, such as tomato paste, pasta sauce, and ketchup, and when tomatoes are cooked. When eaten with foods containing beta-carotene, it’s absorbed even more by the body, which is lucky for us because tomatoes also contain beta-carotene. Tomatoes also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, mainly because they contain vitamin as well which helps produce collagen and plump up skin cells.

Pineapple is high in the enzyme bromelain, which is good for both the skin and for digestion. Bromelain is so good for the skin that it is often used as a topical agent in masks used to exfoliate and clear the skin!  The bromelian found in pineapples also support a healthy digestive system.  Similar to Papain (the enzyme found in Papayas), Bromelain helps with digestion, most important of which is protein.

These juicy fruits are also rich in manganese, which is essential for activating a certain enzyme called prolidase. This enzyme provides the amino acids needed for the formation of collagen in the skin, providing you with healthy, youthful, radiant skin.

Pineapple supplies several important trace minerals, which are important in the synthesis of enzymes and immune bodies. Lack of sufficient mineral intake could lead to a compromised immune system with varied symptoms ranging from the lungs to the colon.

The common cold is not a life threatening disease and often goes away in a few days after running its course. However, a running nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, persistent sneezes, or coughs can leave you feeling miserable. Although nothing can cure a cold, some remedies may ease your symptoms while the infection lasts.

When you're sick, your skin also suffers. A compromised immune system leads to you looking and feeling worn down. Dehydrated skin, red and irritated noses,  and a dull complexion are all common side effects of being sick with a cold. Taking care of your body as a whole will help improve your skin.
