  • What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical Peels are a technique which involves the application of a variety of chemical peel solutions to remove the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. It is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation/melasma, Rosacea, acne, sun damage, and photo aging. Chemical peels have varying strengths, pH balance and varying properties, hence each may produce a different result.

  • What To Expect During A Chemical Peel Procedure

During the Chemical Peel Procedure, most patients experience a warm to hot sensation that may last about two to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. A deeper peel may be produce a more intense stinging. However, the vast majority of superficial peels involve little to no discomfort.

  • How Do Chemical Peels Work?

A chemical peel removes the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, texture, tone of the skin, increased hydration, reduced pore size, clearing of blemishes and dark spots and an overall healthier appearance.

Chemical peels are used to treat imperfections such as hyperpigmentation, uneven or coarse skin texture, fine lines, sun damage, and acne.

Chemical peels refresh the overall complexion and reveals clearer, healthier skin. Multiple treatments may be required for optimum results.

The types of peels used at MaxAesthetics are considered designer peels due to the fact that they are blended and or formulated with natural skin brighteners, fruit acids, antioxidants, vitamins and other natural beneficial ingredients, to improve the appearance of your skin and promote optimum skin health.

  • What Are The Different Types Of Chemical Peels

AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)– naturally occurring, nontoxic organic acids. The most commonly used include Glycolic acid (from sugar cane) and Lactic acid (from milk). Others include Malic acid (apples), Tartaric acid (grapes) and Citric (citrus) acid.

Azelaic Acid – is created by oxygenating Oleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid found in milk fats. This is used as a lightening, lifting and antibacterial agent.

Salicylic Acid – is a Beta-Hydroxy acid extracted from wintergreen and birch. It is a relatively safe, low-risk acid, as it is self-neutralizing and produces a drying and lifting effect.

Retinol/Retinoic Acid –  Vitamin A derivative that converts to retinoic acid and is a DNA regulator. It assists in the synthesis of collagen, aids in the formation of blood vessels and encourages healthy cell turn over and formation.

Vitamin A is widely used in topical formulations that vary from mild derivatives to prescription-only high strength formulations.

TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) – It is a nontoxic, self-neutralizing and keratolytic agent, and is very effective in low strengths. It can be used alone or in tandem with other acids.

Resorcinol is a derivative of phenol and has been used in treatments for peeling for almost 150 years. Resorcinol works by disrupting the hydrogen bonds in keratin, so it is primarily used for addressing pigmention.  Currently, Resorcinol is most commonly used in combination peels such as Jessner’s peels due to the side effect profile.
