Chemical Peel Treatment Information

A chemical peel is a technique which involves the application of a variety of chemical peel solutions to remove the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. It is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation/melasma, Rosacea, acne, sun damage, and photo aging. Chemical peels have varying strengths, pH balance and varying properties, hence each may produce a different result.

During the procedure, most patients experience a warm to hot sensation that may last about two to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. A deeper peel may be produce a more intense stinging. However, the vast majority of superficial peels involve little to no discomfort.

By removing the build-up of dead skin cells via chemical peeling and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, texture, tone of the skin, increased hydration, reduced pore size, clearing of blemishes and dark spots and an overall healthier appearance.

Types of Chemical Peels

AHAs – naturally occurring, nontoxic organic acids. The most commonly used include glycolic (from sugar cane) and lactic (from milk). Others include malic (apples), tartaric (grapes) and citric (citrus) acid.

Azelaic Acid – created by oxygenating oleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid found in milk fats. This is used as a lightening, lifting and antibacterial agent.

Salicylic Acid – a beta-hydroxy acid extracted from wintergreen and birch. It is a relatively safe, low-risk acid, as it is self-neutralizing and produces a drying and lifting effect.

Retinol/Retinoic Acid –  Vitamin A derivative that converts to retinoic acid and is a DNA regulator. It assists in the synthesis of collagen, aids in the formation of blood vessels and encourages healthy cell turn over and formation

TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) – It is a nontoxic, self-neutralizing and keratolytic agent, and is very effective in low strengths. It can be used alone or in tandem with other acids.
