Microneedling Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Microneedling?

Microneedling also known as collagen Induction therapy uses a pen sometimes called collagen pen that is covered with 12 ultra-fine needles that is used on the targeted areas to create small channels in the skin. As the device glides along the skin, these needles penetrate the upper layers of skin to a depth of up to 2 mm (depending on the needle length used) producing thousands of tiny micro-channels or tiny controlled wounds in the skin.

  • How Does the Collagen Pen Work to Benefit the Skin?

How does Microneedling or collagen pen work to benefit the skin?

The procedure introduces multiple fine needles to the skin to produce a “controlled injury” which forces the skin to react by thickening and producing more collagen and elastin. The  dermis is then encouraged to generate new skin cells after the procedure. The skin then becomes thicker, plumper and more youthful. Serums that are applied to the skin afterwards are also up to 1000 times more effective as the pores are opened and the product is absorbed deep into the skin.

These microscopic wounds, which begin to heal within a few hours, stimulate the skin’s healing process.

Microneedling provides all over skin rejuvenation by increasing production of collagen and elastin, and is recommended for the reduction of:

  • What are the Benefits Versus Laser Treatments?

Microneedling  procedure offers a lower risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring, it is safer for darker skin tones than many other laser based skin-rejuvenating options.

Microneedling is suitable for thin and sensitive skin types.

Microneedling is cost-effective, and can be done on areas of your face that chemical peels or laser resurfacing may not be recommended or safe for, such as around the eyes and lips.

Unlike ablative laser resurfacing treatments which remove the outermost layers of skin, microneedling leaves the epidermis intact.

You can resume your regular activity right after within hours.

Microneedling can offer a longer term result due to its collagen building function which will actually helps the skin repair itself, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles, acne and acne scars. Microneedling can even be used to get rid of dark spots and reduce hyperpigmentation by encouraging cells turn over.

  • Is The Treatment Painful?

A microneedling procedure can be anywhere from uncomfortable to slightly painful depending on the depth of the needles.

A topical numbing cream may be applied 10-15 minutes before the procedure which ensures patient comfort.

  • How Long Does it Take To See Results?

How Long Does it Take To See Results From Microneedling?

Typically, rmicroneedling esults are seen after the first treatment or about 48 to 72 hours after due to the spike in protein enzymes that produce collagen.

Lasting and more significant results will be visible after 3-6 treatments. Your skin will continue to improve of the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments.  The new collagen will last for several years, which is why micro needling treatment is considered a very long lasting treatment.

  • Can It Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Can Microneedling be Combined with Other Treatments?

A microneedling procedure can be combined with various other collagen boosting treatments as an effective and fast way to naturally renew the appearance and texture of your skin while providing correction of concerns like stretch marks, acne scars or pock marks, hyperpigmentation and facial fine lines.

  • How Many Treatments Will I Need?

For optimal results, most people require a series of 3 to 5 treatments, usually spaced at least 4 weeks apart depending on the severity of the skin issue being treated. Some deeper scars and stretch marks may require up to ten treatments.

The number of microneedling  treatments for each individual is determined by many factors which is discussed during your consultation.

  • Is It Safe For All Skin Types?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure involving superficial and controlled puncturing of the skin with miniature fine needles and presents almost no long-term side effects when done properly by a professional.

Microneedling has gained popularity in the U.S as it is a simple, safe, cost effective and very effective technique in skin care

  • What Are The Side Effects?

Immediately after your Microneedling procedure you will look as though you have a moderate to severe sunburn and your skin may feel tingly, warm and tighter than usual. This is normal and will subside after 1 to 2 hours and will normally recover within the same day or 24 hours.

You may see slight redness after 24 hours but only in minimal areas or spots. Generally the inflammatory reaction of the skin is short term and subsides significantly after a couple of days, the inflammatory reaction is a part of the skin rejuvenating collagen production process.

With longer needle lengths the skin will look sunburned for a day or two with potential pinprick scabbing (red dots) and will return to normal by day 2 or 3.

Occasionally the patient might have peeling if a more aggressive treatment is done(as in the case of deep pitted scars).

Patients with a more sensitive skin type, darker skin types and older patients may take upwards of one week to fully recover.

  • Can I Use A Dermal Roller To Treat Myself At Home?

Can I Just Use A Dermal Roller To Treat Myself At Home?

At Home Dermal rollers present a number of limitations. Certain parts of the face and body require deeper needle penetration than others for the treatment to work.

It is also very difficult to properly  treat  hard to reach areas, like around the eyes and nose with a dermal roller.

Dermal rollers have a tendency to tear the surface of the skin as opposed to the Professional grade Microneedling pens that are available to a skin care professional.

  • What Are The Risks?

Are There Any Side Effects or Risks From Microneedling?

Side effects and risks are minimal with this type of treatment and typically include minor flaking or dryness of the skin with some mild scab formation.

Microneedling is a non-ablative treatment, therefore hyperpigmentation or darkening of the area treated is highly unlikely but can very rarely occur.

Hyperpigmentation however is usually temporary and subsides after the first couple of months and can also be rapidly lightened with topical skin lighteners and sun protection is a must post care.

If you have a history of cold sores, it could possibly flare up after the treatment.

You may need to use appropriate anti-viral medication prior to treatment and immediately following microneedling.

  • How Should I Prepare for a Treatment?

    • Do not use Retin-A products, auto-immune therapies or Alpha hydroxy products  at least 3 days prior to your treatment.
    • Avoid prolonged sun exposure to the area being Microneedled 24 hours prior to your treatment.
    • Microneedling treatments is not recommended on sunburned skin.
    •  If you are dark skin tone, you may need to use skin brighteners for 7 -14 days prior
    • Do not take Asprin 24 hours prior or please let us know if you are on blood thinners.
    • If you are a smoker, it is recommended that you take at least 200 mg of Vitamin C per each cigarette smoked to assist your skin in the rebuilding and healing process because Cigarettes tend to deplete the body of Vitamin C  which is needed to aid in Collagen building.
  • How Do I Care For My Skin Post Procedure?

Use tepid water to cleanse the treated area for the first 48 hours post treatment and dry the area gently without rubbing.

When touching the area treated, ensure that your hands are clean in order to avoid the chance of infection.

Avoid applying makeup products for the first 12 hours following treatment .

Mineral based make up products are highly recommended after microneedling due to the natural sunscreen factor (Zinc oxide) which may also aid in healing of the skin.

A complete home care and product recommendation will be made at time of consultation and treatment. The recommended home care must be followed diligently to ensure best result.

  • Is This Treatment Safe for Dark Skin or Black Skin?

Microneedling is a great treatment for all skin types, but in darker skin types, the risk of hyperpigmentation is always a concern especially with deeper needle depths and if the technician is too aggressive during the treatment procedure.

Discoloration caused by skin needling is rare, but can occur when the needle depth is 1.5 mm or deeper, and the procedure is done too frequently without a long enough healing period of a minimum of 4 weeks.

Priming the skin pre-procedure with brightening products such as Hydroquinone, Retinols and Kojic acid prior to Microneedling on dark skin is important to achieve optimal results.
