What Causes Under Eye Puffiness and how to prevent eye puffiness

Maxine Dean • Sep 07, 2021

Under eye bags and puffiness usually the result of fluid retention. Lymph is a clear fluid similar to plasma that cleans up cellular waste, bacteria, and protein. Sometimes Lymph becomes sluggish and pools in certain areas causing puffiness or swelling. Lymphatic fluid edema or fluid retention can be caused by many things.

A few of the most common culprits are:

  • Eating Salty Food - Consuming too much sodium, and too little water, causes your body to hold onto all the moisture it can to prevent dehydration. That excess water weight can make you feel bloated and puffy all over, including your under eyes.
  • Age - Thanks to gravity, the cushion fat deposits along the orbital bone starts to sag as we get older. The skin around the eyes also changes, the tissue becomes thinner and less elastic.
  • Hormonal Fluctuations - Menstruation, pregnancy, and other things that can cause hormonal imbalances or fluctuations can lead to puffy eyes.
  • Changes in the Weather - Heat and humid conditions can throw off the moisture content of your eyes, leaving them drier and more sensitive. As a result, the mucous membrane of your eyes becomes irritated and causes swelling of the eye area.
  • Sleeping on Your Side or Stomach - Gravity is at work while you sleep! Lymphatic fluid can pool around the eyes if you sleep on your side or stomach.
  • Allergies, Illnesses, or Dermatitis - Exposure to pollutants, irritants, and allergens can lead to puffy eyes, dark circles or under eye bags. Thyroid conditions can also cause eye issues.
  • Genetics - Unfortunately, dark circles, eye bags, and eye puffiness can be hereditary.

There a are a few steps you can take to reduce or prevent under eye puffiness or undereye bags

  1. Use a cool compress or even better , try a cool teaspoon pressed under your eyes and keep it on your eyes for about 5 mins. The cold temperature will help relieve puffiness.
  2. Cut down on fluids before bedtime and reduce salt in your diet.
  3. Don't smoke.
  4. Get enough sleep and if possible sleeping on your back will help to prevent fluid build up under your eyes.
  5. Sleep with your head slightly raised to enable proper fluid drainage.
  6. If allergy is the culprit for you, then anti-histamines may help.
  7. Use cosmetics products to help minimize the look of puffy eyes. Either eye concealers or a depuffing eye tool that massages lightly to improve fluid and lymph drainage

There are also effective professional spa treatments for Eye-depuffing.

  • MaxAesthetics Microcurrent Eye-depuffing treatment is a great option to reduce eyebags  by draining fluid and lymphatic drainage.
  • Radio-Frequency Eye Tightening utilizes the skin tightening power of radio frequency to both drain fluid and tighten your eye.
